Our Perfect Storm

by Carley Fortune

4 out of 5 stars

Carley Fortune keeps getting better, and Our Perfect Storm might be her most emotionally layered book yet.

Frankie and George have been best friends since childhood. The kind of close that makes everyone around them wonder how they've never crossed that line. When Frankie's fiancé leaves her the morning after night one of their wedding weekend, it's George who steps in with a plan: go on the honeymoon anyway, together, to Tofino. One week to heal. One week to figure out if their friendship is even salvageable. One week that, inevitably, changes everything.

Fortune writes setting like a character, and Tofino is rendered so vividly here. The rain, the ancient forest, the dramatic Pacific coastline, that the landscape itself feels like it's holding something back, just like her characters. The slow unraveling of why Frankie and George have pulled apart is handled with real care, and Fortune takes her time with it in a way that rewards patience.

What I loved most is that this isn't a simple "friends realize they're in love" story. Both characters have done damage to the relationship over the years, and the book grapples with that honestly. George, in particular, has layers I didn't expect, and the scenes where those layers peel back are the best writing in the book.

My one note is that Frankie's voice took a chapter or two to fully click for me. She's guarded in a way that initially feels like distance, but once I was inside her perspective, I didn't want to leave.

A beautiful summer read with real emotional teeth.
