The Goal

by Elle Kennedy

5 out of 5 stars

Four books into the Off-Campus series, I didn’t expect the hockey team’s resident good boy to give me the entry I’d end up loving most, but here we are. The Goal takes John Tucker, a side character I’d only known in flashes from the earlier books, and hands him a story with real stakes attached, and Elle Kennedy uses every one of them.

The setup, without spoiling the specifics: one reckless night between Tucker and Sabrina James turns into something neither of them planned for, and the book spends its pages watching two people figure out how to build a life together that neither of them saw coming. Sabrina is pre-law, fiercely independent, and has spent years being underestimated and misjudged by people who never bothered to actually know her, and Kennedy gives her the space to be genuinely complicated instead of just “the love interest with a secret heart of gold.” Tucker, for his part, is the most grounded hero in the series so far. He’s still got the easy charm, but underneath it is someone who shows up, consistently, without making a production out of it.

What struck me most is how the book handles the timeline. Large stretches of it run parallel to events from The Score, and getting a second angle on scenes I already knew, including some genuinely heavy ones, added a dimension I wasn’t expecting. It could have felt repetitive; instead it felt like getting the fuller picture. The family dynamics in the back half, particularly one confrontation with a parent who’s badly misjudged Sabrina, are some of the most satisfying pages in the whole series.

If I have a reservation, it’s a small one: the pacing dips in a couple of places where the book leans on side-character drama that pulls focus from Tucker and Sabrina themselves, and I wanted a little more room for the two of them to just be together without outside noise. It’s a minor complaint in a book that otherwise nails the emotional beats it’s going for.

If you’ve been working through this series, The Goal is the one that earns its reputation. Warmer, steadier, and more emotionally grounded than the books before it. Five stars, and genuinely my favorite of the four so far.
