The Teacher

3 out of 5 stars

Every single twist was incredibly obvious..

Freida McFadden has become a go-to for a certain kind of thriller: fast-moving, structurally clever, and designed to keep you second-guessing until the final pages. *The Teacher* fits squarely in that tradition, and while it didn't hit me as hard as some of her other work, it's a quick read.

The story alternates between Eve, a high school math teacher who seems to have the perfect life, and Addie, a student with a complicated reputation and secrets she'll go to great lengths to protect. What links them is a school scandal from the previous year, and a truth buried beneath layers of rumor and misdirection. McFadden is very good at withholding just enough to keep you reading; every chapter ends at a moment that makes you want to flip forward, and the dual POV structure generates real tension.

What I found most effective here is how McFadden plays with the idea of who gets to be believed. The thriller mechanics around reputation, credibility, and who the world trusts are sharply drawn and genuinely interesting. And the final act delivers a payoff that recontextualizes enough of what came before to feel satisfying.

My reservations: I guessed a significant portion of the ending earlier than McFadden likely intended, and some of the character motivations felt a little underdeveloped. I've also come to expect a certain emotional wallop from her books, and *The Teacher* is more coolly constructed than gut-punching.

That said, if you're in the mood for a fast, twisty read with a satisfying, but transparent reveal, this delivers.
