I have come to rely on Mary Kubica for a certain kind of thriller experience: atmospheric, psychologically tense, built around domestic settings that turn threatening with remarkable efficiency. *It's Not Her* delivers exactly that and then some.
When Courtney Gray discovers her brother and sister-in-law dead in their lakeside cottage during what should have been a peaceful family vacation, the world the book has been building collapses immediately. Her niece Reese is missing. Her nephew Wyatt is asleep upstairs, unharmed. And a resort town that looked idyllic turns out to be dense with long-buried secrets.
Kubica's great skill is making every character suspicious without making any of them feel falsely constructed. The question of Reese, victim or perpetrator, drives the novel's tension effectively, and the author resists easy answers for long enough that you genuinely don't know where you're going to land.
The final act is tightly plotted and lands with real impact. I sat with the ending for a while.
For readers who love atmospheric domestic thrillers with small-town secrets and family dysfunction at their heart, this is an excellent choice. Kubica continues to be one of the most reliable voices in the genre.
