The Deal

by Elle Kennedy

5 out of 5 stars

I was not planning to fall this hard. I picked up The Deal expecting something light and fun, a palette cleanser between heavier reads, and instead I found myself up past midnight, completely unable to put it down. I wanted to read these before watching the series on Prime, and now I have discovered there is an entire Briar U universe to devour!

*The Deal* is the first book in Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series, and it follows Hannah Wells and Garrett Graham in a setup that sounds familiar on paper: fake dating, reluctant partners, slow-burn tension. But what sets this one apart is how genuinely funny and grounded it is. Hannah is one of the most refreshingly self-possessed heroines I've encountered in new adult romance. She's not waiting to be saved. She's not pining from a distance. She knows what she wants and she negotiates for it, and that confidence is magnetic from the very first page.

Garrett, for his part, manages to be the cocky jock trope without being insufferable, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Kennedy gives him actual depth: real stakes with hockey, real vulnerability underneath the bravado, real moments where you understand exactly why Hannah falls for him. Their banter is sharp and genuinely funny, and the chemistry is the slow, inevitable kind that sneaks up on you before you realize it's already happened.

What I appreciated most was that this book takes Hannah's backstory seriously without making it the center of every scene. It informs who she is without defining her, and Kennedy handles the weight of it with real care. The romance earns its emotional payoff because you've watched both characters actually grow into people who deserve each other.

This is clearly a series-starter doing its job: introducing a world I already want to revisit.

I gave this five stars, I'd give it six if I could.
